Seabreeze sweeps bowling districts

DELAND — As the Seabreeze coaches and players gathered for post-tournament celebration photos, you had to wonder if everybody’s face would show up in the frame.
After all, when both of your teams win a district title, it means a lot of squeezing together just to get in the picture. And that seemed just fine with the Sandcrabs.
The Seabreeze boys battled through the consolation bracket and grabbed their second straight title, while the girls squad had an easier time, winning in three games in the finals during Tuesday’s District 3 bowling championship at Sunshine Lanes.
The top two teams — and the top three individuals not on a qualifying team — advance to next week’s state finals.
While the Sandcrabs defended their title, they took the bumpy road to get there. They were one game away from beating DeLand in the semifinals before losing. Then, they were one game from elimination in the finals before rallying behind a flurry of strikes and spares to win 3-2 and force a winner-take-all match.
“The one thing about these kids is they have a lot of heart,” Sandcrabs boys coach Bob Guidotti said. “I just asked them, ‘How bad do you want it?’ And they responded.”
In the finale, the teams split the first two games before Seabreeze held on for a 14-pin victory in Game 3, then opened Game 4 with six straight strikes to put the Bulldogs away.
On the girls side, Seabreeze kept its perfect season intact after beating Atlantic in the semifinals and DeLand in the finals to win its first district title.
“They did exactly what I expected them to do,” girls assistant coach Brent Begnoche said. “All along we told them that we were going to have the targets on our backs and they would have to step up their game. And the girls certainly responded.”
